According to Vedic astrology, Rahu and Ketu are considered the shadow planets or lunar nodes. It is generally believed that both planets will negatively impact individuals. Rahu and Ketu are also known as snake planets. The planet Rahu is depicted as the head of a serpent and Ketu as the tail.
The placements of Rahu and Ketu have a strong impact on a native’s education, career, marriage, progeny, and other important life aspects. Rahu and Ketu are also known as snake planets.
When Rahu and Ketu are debilitated or in an enemy’s house, it can produce negative results. Performing the Rahu Homam and Ketu Homam helps pacify the planets.
An unfavourable Rahu leads to Doshas such as Kalatra Dosha, Putra Dosha and Sarpa Dosha. The deteriorated Rahu also causes mental fickleness, marriage problems and diseases.
A hostile Ketu creates impediments like poverty, wealth loss, marriage delays and ill health.
Rahu Homam is a fire ritual that is performed to eliminate the adverse effects of Rahu. Performing Rahu Homam and Rahu Pooja eliminates Rahu Dosha from a native’s horoscope.
Performing these Homas and Poojas helps persons who are undergoing the Maha Dasha or Sub Dasha of Rahu. Rahu Homam can annul adverse effects and bestow a subtle life on natives.
Rahu is known for causing illnesses, failure, hindrances and confusion in a native’s life. When Rahu unites with other planets such as the Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, it forms negative Yogas which might cause various problems in a native’s life.
Despite its spiritual feature, Ketu also brings malefic effects. When Ketu unites with Rahu, it leads to dreadful Kaala Sarpa Dosha, which causes dreadful problems in life such as accidents, recurrent misfortunes, etc. When Ketu unites with other planets, it can form negative Yogas.
Importance of Rahu Homam
The Rahu Homam can eliminate or reduce the negative effects of these planets. It also bestows success and relieves conflicts, hindrances and ailments.
Legend of Rahu And Ketu
Once, the celestial beings and demons churned the Milky Ocean (Samudra Manthan) for the elixir, the nectar of immortality. They used Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. Along with many treasures, Lord Dhanvantari appeared with the elixir pot. Lord Vishnu took the beautiful Mohini form to distribute the nectar only to celestial beings and not to demons.
However, a demon named Swarbhanu disguised himself as a god and sat between the Sun and the Moon to drink the nectar. But he was recognised, and Vishnu immediately beheaded him with his divine Sudarshana chakra. As Swarbhanu had already consumed a few drops of the elixir, he became immortal. After beheading, his head and body continued to live separately as Rahu and Ketu.
It is believed that Lord Brahma attached Swarbhanu’s head to a serpent’s body, which became Rahu, while his torso was attached to the head of the serpent, which became Ketu.
