Who is Lord Hayagriva?
Hayagriva is one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. He is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, often depicted with a human body and a horse’s face. Lord Hayagriva blesses his devotees in a white garment, sitting in a white lotus. He has four hands in which he holds a conch (Shank), a discus (Chakra), and palm leaf manuscripts and carries Gnyana Mudra, the posture of wisdom.
Lord Hayagriva embodies wisdom and knowledge, where Lord Brahma and Goddess Saraswati reside. He is the four forms of the Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva Vedas. Lord Hayagriva is the one who taught knowledge to Saraswati, one of the Tri Devi.
The Hayagriva incarnation is mentioned in the epic Mahabharata in the Moksha Parva (Chapter 357).
In Sanskrit, ‘Haya’ means ‘Horse’, and Greeva means ‘neck’. The horse-faced Lord Hayagriva, an incarnation of Vishnu, bestows knowledge and wisdom on his devotees.
What is the significance of the Hayagriva Pooja?
People who wish to become good orators pray and perform puja to Lord Hayagriva to attain the status of “Vachaspati” (Master in speech). Children also participate in the Hayagriva puja to seek his blessings for success in education and higher studies, as well as knowledge.

Legend behind the Lord Hayagriva
According to the Bhagavata Purana, Lord Vishnu assumed the incarnation of Hayagriva to rescue the Vedas from the demons named Madhu and Kaitabha. The demons stole the Vedas from Brahma and hid them under the sea waters. Lord Brahma requested Vishnu to save the Vedas from the evil hands. So, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Hayagriva and rescued the Vedas from the demons by killing them.
